What to consider when choosing memory.

Memory stores data temporarily, keeping the files and apps you’re running open and available.

M-series chips include unified memory, which is more efficient than traditional RAM. It allows apps to efficiently share data between the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine — so everything you do is fast and fluid. The more memory you have, the more apps you can run simultaneously, the larger the AI models you can use, and the better everything will perform.

To learn more about what to consider, watch this short video. Then compare your options to decide how much is right for you.

Can I add memory later?

Unified memory can’t be upgraded later. If you think you’ll need additional memory in the future, choose a higher capacity.

How much memory you need depends on how you will use your Mac.

36GB - Best if you typically work on advanced projects that require enormous files and content libraries.

48GB - Ideal for professional workflows like photo editing, video editing, and music creation, or if you multitask across pro apps.

64GB - Ideal if you typically work on advanced projects that require enormous files and content libraries, if you multitask across pro apps, or if you are looking to run larger on-device AI models.

128GB - Recommended if you work on advanced projects with memory-intensive workflows, like running large language models.

128GB - Recommended if you work on advanced projects with memory-intensive workflows, like running large language models.

256GB - Recommended if you multitask across memory-intensive pro apps, process demanding content or data, or run virtual machines.

What to consider when choosing storage.

Mac uses fast storage for your apps, documents, photos, movies, music, and other files and libraries.

How much storage you need depends on how you use your Mac. The more storage you have, the more files your Mac can hold and the faster it can access them when needed. A good way to figure out your storage needs is to check how much you’re using on your current computer. If you’re near your limit, it’s a good idea to consider a larger capacity.

How to check your storage

On your Mac, go to System Settings > General > Storage to learn how much storage you’re using. If you’re nearing your limit, it’s a good idea to consider a larger capacity.

Can I add storage later?

Internal storage can’t be upgraded later. If you think you’ll need additional storage in the future, it’s a good idea to upgrade now.
